Some evenings, you want to hear a story you already know. On others, you want to meet someone new and find out where their story goes. Both are good reasons to press play, and my recommendation starts with what you want from tonight’s listening.
If you want to settle in without spending much time following new information, I would choose a familiar favorite. If you feel curious about different characters, places and events, I would choose something new.
When I would choose a familiar story
With a story you have heard before, you already know something about the beginning, the people and the events ahead. You can recognize where you are without having as many new details to follow.
That is why I recommend returning to a favorite when you want to settle in quickly. You know the sort of experience you are choosing. Perhaps you remember the opening especially well, or you simply like spending time with those characters.
Familiarity also gives you a different way to enjoy the recording. You can pay attention to the voice, the cadence and the way a passage sounds. Knowing what happens does not take that enjoyment away. A line you recognize can be part of what makes you want to hear it again.
This is my personal recommendation, and your preference may be different.
When I would choose a new story
A new story offers the pleasure of discovering something. You get to learn who the characters are, picture an unfamiliar setting and follow events as they unfold. If that is what you feel like doing, give yourself something new to explore.
There may be an episode you have noticed but have not started, or a setting that catches your interest while you browse. You do not need a more complicated reason than wanting to hear it.
I would make this choice when you feel like following the plot and getting to know its world. You can enjoy that curiosity for as long as you want to listen. Starting a new story does not commit you to reaching the ending that evening.
The voice is part of the experience
Listeners have told me they return to the podcast and enjoy the stories and the narration. I have seen comments from Australia, different US states, the UK and other parts of the world.
When choosing an episode, you can consider the sound of it as well as the story itself. A familiar voice can accompany a completely new setting. Returning to Adult Sleep Stories still leaves room to discover a story you have never heard.
If you fell asleep partway through
You might open an episode again and realize you cannot remember where you stopped listening. There is no single way you have to handle that.
If you want to find the next part, my suggestion is to move forward gently, checking a little at a time until you reach events you do not remember. An approximate place is enough. Once something sounds unfamiliar, you can listen from there and see whether it feels like a comfortable point to continue.
You can also start over, return to a section you enjoyed, or simply let the recording play. The right choice depends on whether you want to follow the story closely or enjoy its company.
If finding your place starts to feel like a chore, leave it for another time. Catching up does not need to become part of your evening’s to-do list.
Make one choice for tonight
Ask yourself a simple question: would you rather hear something you know, or discover what happens next?
For something familiar, choose a favorite whose voice and rhythm you enjoy. For something new, choose the characters or setting that interest you. Neither choice needs to become a rule for every night.
Browse Adult Sleep Stories on Spotify, choose what appeals to you, and let tonight’s listening begin there.
